We're all navigating the unknown

How Small Business Artisans are Adapting During COVID-19

Michelle Wiederhold of Twig & Lace was on a high strolling into March. She had introduced her Hitched” collection of hand-stamped gifts and accessories on Instagram and took a vacation to recharge before entering the busy spring market season. She was simply embracing the excitement and the hint of Spring in the air.

And then everything changed.

Markets, art shows, and craft fairs were canceled and the doors of boutique shops were closed. Collectively, most handmade sellers and artisans watched their future incomes disappear. Similar to Twig & Lace, Melinda Wolff earns 40% of her annual income selling her reclaimed wood jewelry at art shows. “As of right now, I’m currently in limbo with the shows that I have signed up for this summer as everything is undetermined at this point.”

The current situation may feel like walking into the unknown, but one thing is certain; handmade sellers are creative and creative minds find alternatives.

Alternative Delivery Channels

Developing creative alternatives is what Made In Omaha has done. Made in Omaha is a retail platform for artists and makers from the Omaha, Nebraska area. Made in Omaha is “working as diligently as possible to keep income coming to our talented local makers."

In addition to offering free shipping and 15% off gift card purchases, Made in Omaha quickly rolled out its "Care Package" program. Pre-made and custom care packages include a personalized note to the recipient.
