Turning Passion into Profit

Transitioning from Conventional Careers to Artisan Entrepreneurship

Shifting from a traditional career to artisan entrepreneurship might feel like uncharted territory but with a simple leap of faith you can turn your creative passions into a thriving artisan business. My name is Keith Clark, the creative force behind the Keith Clark Collection. With a background in leadership and design, I’ve explored many career paths which join creativity and analytical thinking.

I began my career as a choreographer and dance instructor and this soon paved a path for me in massage therapy. My first massage was a pivotal moment when I found that a 90-minute session was able to correct knee issues that my doctors could not. Intrigued and inspired, I delved into independent study, working on friends and myself. When I moved to Dallas in 2003 to teach dance I was so excited about the opportunities coming my way. However, as I took on a corporate 9-5 to supplement my dancing, it became clear that it wasn't a harmonious fit for me. Thus, the transition to becoming Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) began.

After receiving my massage license, I worked briefly at a local massage clinic while still teaching dance and searching for a location to open my own business. Thus, Revivify Massage Therapy was born, now standing strong at 12 years. As an LMT, I began to introduce aromatherapy into my sessions, incorporating lotions, butters, and natural essences. Clients began inquiring about these scents that provided relaxation, relief, rejuvenation, and mental inspiration. This marked my foray into the realm of aromatherapy. I became deeply invested in rejuvenating and enhancing health in a natural way. I began using essential oils more often in my practice.

Artisan entrepreneurship is about growth. Adapt your strategies based on what works. Be open to trying new things and adjusting your approach. A willingness to learn and evolve is vital to building a successful artisan venture.

And, as I learned more and found oil blends on the market lacking, I began making my own oils to suit the needs of my clientele. The scents wafting down the hallways of my office piqued curiosity, and clients began asking if they could buy these distinctive blends that were unavailable anywhere else.

Building My Own Artisanal Line

Don't abandon your current skills; repurpose them. Your expertise can be the cornerstone of your new venture. Identify the skills that align with your creative goals and leverage them effectively.

The very first homemade product that I used with clients was my All Natural Pain Relief Balm, a topical balm that assists with muscle and joint pain. People loved it and their inquiries sparked my realization that I could offer these products beyond the massage room. This marked the inception of a two-and-a-half year research and development project that birthed the Keith Clark Collection.

Over the ensuing eight years, my collection evolved and expanded. My journey from a conventional career to becoming an artisan entrepreneur felt like a natural progression. A risk-taker at heart, I understood the significance of utilizing the talents bestowed upon me. The journey wasn't without its challenges – financial hurdles, recipe refinements, sleepless nights spent researching – but these trials shaped the brand into what it is today. The learning curve was steep, but my determination was unwavering.

Every Keith Clark Collection product is meticulously designed, handmade, labeled, and poured. As I still am an active Licensed Massage Therapist, the question often arises whether the brand's growth will compel me to cease practicing massage therapy. A lot of my massage clients ask if I will stop massaging or close Revivify Massage Therapy. The answer isn’t simple, as I hold a deep love for helping people through massage and the synergy between my artisanal venture and massage practice holds a delicate balance which rejuvenates me when occupational fatigue sets in.

Launching the Business

When asked how I knew it was time to take the leap, my response has always been rooted in finding peace with the decisions I make. Fear of failure often holds people back, but failures are essential for growth. The pivotal moment came when I realized that people benefitted from my products, trusted their consistency, and repeatedly invested in them. This was the sign that the Keith Clark Collection was on the right track.

The past eight years have been a roller coaster of triumphs and tribulations, moments of uncertainty followed by breakthroughs. Keith Clark Collection started online but expanded to in-person events like pop-up shops, farmer's markets, and bazaars. The brand's uniqueness and quality have garnered attention, leading to wholesale deals, private labeling, and collaborations with other brands. The pandemic brought a surge in online sales due to the products' beneficial nature.

Yet, the Keith Clark Collection goes beyond a solo venture. I’ve learned that entrepreneurship is a community effort. I embrace an independent distributorship program, allowing a variety of products from the collection to be sold wholesale by independent distributors. This enables me to better engage with my community, listen to feedback, and adapt based on their needs.

My journey has brought me through many peaks and valleys but the key lies in maintaining patience as you progress. Avoid rushing or trying to grow too rapidly, risking burnout due to overwhelming demand. Transitioning takes time. Stay true to your authentic self and be patient with the process. Amid mass-produced products, authenticity stands out. Remember, success is a blend of consistency and staying true to your passion, regardless of the challenges. Amidst the pursuit of profit, remember your 'why'. Why did you embark on this journey? Why are you dedicated to your craft? Allow this 'why' to serve as your anchor during challenging times. Even if your motivations evolve, ensure they remain at the core of your business. I remain driven by a love for creating and working with my hands, and this passion helps drive off burnout.

Transitioning to artisan entrepreneurship is a personal journey. Your unique blend of skills and experiences will guide you. Keep it practical, stay focused on your passion, and take intentional steps. With determination and a clear path, you can transform your creative dreams into a thriving artisan business.
