Are you aware of National Handmade Day? It’s right around the corner- the first Saturday of April. We are starting to strategically support and promote National Handmade Day. We are working to make a difference in the hearts and minds of consumers and bring new appreciation to the handmade industry.

This is our first year helping to amplify the message Amy’s crafted around National Handmade Day. If you aren’t familiar with this holiday, we wrote about National Handmade Day in our recent magazine. It’s a beautiful story of how one artisan recognized something missing for our industry, and decided to do something about it. You can read it here (open for everyone):

Celebrate Craftsmanship: Embracing the Movement for National Handmade Day

Most of you know us the as pragmatists that take things one step at a time. Technically National Handmade Day is a registered holiday in the US, but we are not letting that stop us. That is just the starting point to something much bigger. We see a long term vision for how this can help artisans everywhere. But we don’t want to get ahead ourselves, as getting an internationally recognized holiday will take years (trust us, we have actually researched it).

Where Handmade Seller is starting

Here’s what we are doing this year to support this wonderful holiday to build on what is already there:

Writing about it and sharing in our magazine for those not familiar with the holiday. We want to engage more artisans in amplifying it. We published an article in our Winter magazine about this holiday.
Enlisting our publishing friends to share about the holiday. Our friends over at ArtSloth Magazine are also helping to amplify the message. Check out their latest issue to read our collaborative article about the holiday. We will keep enlisting industry friends to help.
Sharing and promoting the event on Social media to help raise awareness.

Now, here is where we can use your help. I feel like I am letting you all in on a great conspiracy I have to help our whole industry. I promise it won’t feel like this:

What can my artisan business do to help?

As small businesses, everyone is pressed for time. Building movements are hard too, and take time and intention. Here are a couple simple ways you can participate and help the movement. It also gives you something easy to talk about for social media, answering that “Gee, what should I post about right now” question. Here are three simple ideas to choose from to support the holiday:

Share a meet the maker post about yourself and what you make, and include hashtags for #nationalhandmadeday. It could be something as simple as “In honor of the upcoming National Handmade Day on April 5th, I thought it would be great to re-introduce myself….” Feel free to tag Handmade Seller magazine so I can like as well (the benefits of knowing to do this since you are on my email list!). @thehandmademagazine on Instagram, @handmadeseller.bsky.social on Bluesky. I will also watch for the hashtags on Threads too.
Share on social media some of your favorite artisans and why you love their product. Include the hashtags for #nationalhandmadeday as well.
Share a “Did you know” post about National Handmade Day. It could be something as simple as “Did you know April 5th is National Handmade Day? What a great day to support your favorite artisan businesses!”

With so many people thinking about small business again, we want to engage that audience to keep thinking about our businesses. This is the power of us organizing and sharing as a community.

Next year we will be embarking on a lot more storytelling to engage consumers, and I will start sharing more about that this summer in anticipation of next year’s holiday.
