Let Them Inspire You

Discover the vibrant local artisan culture of Saint Lucia through one traveler's inspiring journey off the beaten path, exploring creativity beyond typical tourist experiences.

Nestled in the heart of the West Indies lies an island called Saint Lucia. Saint Lucia is best known for its Piton Mountains, which appear to rise right up out of the ocean. This winter, I had the opportunity to escape the bitter cold winter and retreat to Saint Lucia. I needed to get away- from the cold, the deadlines, and the repetitive routines I was stuck in; and I knew a fresh perspective and a change of scenery would help me get the creative juices flowing again.

Much of the tourism to Saint Lucia occurs via cruise ships or all-inclusive resorts. For this trip I was looking for a different experience. I wanted to be off the beaten path, to explore the local culture of Saint Lucia. I stayed in the Laborie area in the south and began my explorations from there.

As part of my escape, I planned to find and talk to local artisans. I wanted to see Saint Lucia through their eyes. As I prepared for my trip, I did a fair amount of online research. I hunted and hunted to see if I could figure out which artisans I wanted to talk to ahead of time. This should be easy, right? I was able to find a few breadcrumbs and hints for ideas. However, it proved far more challenging than I thought it would be. But once I was there I let the island work her magic.
