Is now the right time to join Bluesky?

Explore the pros and cons of Bluesky social media platform: Is it the right time for your business to join this emerging alternative to traditional networks?

There has been a proliferation of new social media platforms over the last few years. It’s often to the point where it is hard to keep track of who is doing what, and who owns what. There is also the off again, on again ban of TikTok. This has also made many businesses realize the risks of being tied to one social media platform. The drop in Instagram engagement has further compounded the challenges for many businesses. Social media promotion remains an important component of marketing for many artisan businesses.

I first started tracking the rise of Bluesky in 2023. At the time, it felt like one more social media platform. Who has time to deal with that? I signed up while they were still in closed beta and sat patiently on the waiting list. In December 2023 I was invited, and was part of the first 3 million that joined the app.

We are all busy business owners. Most of us don’t really feel a deep desire to understand the protocols some platform is built upon. Part of the messaging around Bluesky is its importance on how it is built. You might hear that is built on the AT Protocol and is decentralized. There is a lot of technical jargon used that probably just makes you shrug. It feels like a lot of messaging is there to get early adopters to give it a try.

There is more to the Bluesky story than just the protocol its built on. In order to decide if its right for you, it helps to understand more about the platform. Since Bluesky is still in its infancy, I will share some of the pros and cons of this ecosystem. I want to help you think about if it makes sense for your business. In part 2, I will share more details on how you can get up and running on this platform quickly and easily.
