An update on the most recent developments for the marketplace

Over the course of the last few years, I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing a number of marketplaces. Each marketplace has its own unique origin story and evolution journey. They all have their own vibe.

On the other side, some artisan businesses are more transactional. They simply care about size of the buying pool and cost. Others are about who is running the platform and how their ecosystem operates. And still others are somewhere in between.

I ran a poll several months ago to learn more about marketplaces. When I asked how many marketplaces artisans were selling on, here were the results.

Over half of artisan businesses sell on more than one marketplace. This makes plenty of room for marketplaces that don’t start with an E and end with a Y. And a new option is about to become available for you.

The business model created by Artisans Cooperative is unique among marketplaces. Cooperative models for marketplaces are not typical in our experience. They are a different type of opportunity for artisan businesses. The group behind Artisans Cooperative starting working after the infamous Etsy strike several years ago.
