5 Questions with Jane Nickerson from Knit Fit

Have you ever seen a lovely pattern but been hesitant to buy it because you are concerned it won’t fit properly? I had the opportunity to talk with the KnitFit™ team at the h+h america’s show. We talked about the concepts of size equity and being able to find patterns that fit for each individual. I asked Jane Nickerson to be part of this quarter’s 5 questions with interview to share more about how the KnitFit platform and community is evolving.
I owned a yarn shop in a resort town for ten years, and I saw knitters constantly swatching, measuring, modifying, and still really struggling to knit sweaters that actually fit. I realized the issue wasn’t the knitters, it was the fact that pattern sizing reflects gross averages at best, whereas real people come in endlessly unique shapes and proportions. As an experienced knitter I knew how to tailor a pattern, but it’s a lot of work and not everyone is interested in learning such intensely technical skills.
Lucky for them, I also have a background in Computer Aided Engineering and worked with CAD software for twenty years. I knew I could combine this knowledge with my crafting expertise to improve the experience of knitting for everyone. So, along with my husband and his colleagues in software development, I created KnitFit™.
The KnitFit™ app solves the problem of poorly fitted sweaters- and requires no math from users! Developing this technology has became a bit of a family business, and with insights from my adult kids, the app evolved beyond custom sizing solutions into a multifaceted project management and social tool for modern knitters with mobile-optimized patterns (including stitch counters, highlighting, comments, etc.), groups, following, notifications, and a host of other innovative tools.
